Dr. Sonia Malhotra is an Adult and Pediatric Palliative Medicine physician at University Medical Center, New Orleans (UMCNO) and Tulane School of Medicine (SOM) and an Associate Professor. Dr. Malhotra did her residency in Med-Peds at Tulane SOM and was a Chief Resident in Pediatrics before traveling to the University of Pittsburgh to complete an Adult Palliative Medicine fellowship with a Pediatric Track. She stayed at Pitt for an extra year as Junior Faculty while completing her Masters degree in Medical Education.
Since 2015, Dr. Malhotra has been building Palliative Medicine programs in the New Orleans region. During her two years at Ochsner Health System, she built the state of Louisiana’s first Pediatric Palliative Medicine program and was awarded with numerous honors including Gambit Magazine’s 40 Under 40 Award. She was recruited back to Academia in 2017 where she created and built the UMCNO/Tulane SOM Palliative Medicine program which has an inpatient services, a free-standing outpatient clinic and inpatient hospice program. Dr. Malhotra helped build the Tulane Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship, the first in the state of Louisiana, and serves as the UMCNO Site Director which has now trained its fifth class of fellows.
Dr. Malhotra is also an Associate Section Chief for GIM, Geriatrics and Palliative Care at Tulane SOM. She is a faculty and coach for the Tulane Anti-Racism Leadership Institute and has a keen interest in furthering anti-racism efforts in Palliative Medicine and advancing Humanism through the intersections of lived experiences, poetry and spoken word. She serves on the Louisiana Governor's Council for Palliative Care.
