Professor of Medicine, Director of Research Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine
Northwell Health
Edith Burns joined the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell as Professor of Medicine and Director of Research in 2019. She was a faculty member in the Departments of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1998-2018 and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health from 1988-1998. Her work and experience over the past 35+ years has spanned bench and clinical research, education and training, and clinical care. Her research focuses predominantly on older adult populations but has encompassed younger adults and children as caregivers, issues of women’s health and disparities in minority populations. Her work incorporates patient, family and provider perceptions and expectations for disease and treatment outcomes, and the influence of moderating factors (e.g., cultural background, social media, etc.) on adherence to treatment, health outcomes and quality of life. Over the past several years she has served as site PI on large, multi-institutional grants examining approaches to improving patient-cetnered goals of care, and has assisted her division in evaluating Northwell’s transformation to an Age-Friendly Health System.
As a clinician-educator a significant portion of Dr. Burns’ academic career has been continuously devoted to mentoring students, residents, fellows and junior faculty in the fields of geriatrics, palliative and internal medicine, and health services research, accounting for 50% of her professional effort on a continual basis. She served as Program Director for the Geriatrics Fellowship at all three institutions and continues her work developing innovative models of education and care and mentoring junior colleagues who are guiding the evolution of geriatrics training at Northwell Health.
Dr. Burns received her BA from Wellesley College, MD from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, completed Internal Medicine residency and Behavioral Medicine fellowship through the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and Geriatrics fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
