Data Scientist
Duke University
Michael Gao serves as the Principal Data Scientist at the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, where he leads development and technical implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions in the realm of clinical care and health care operations. He has deployed dozens of algorithmic solutions – these include real-time detection systems for sepsis, patient decompensation, and mortality risk. Furthermore, he has designed and analyzed clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of these technological interventions. His research focus includes representation learning for Electronic Health Records, evaluation of clinical time series, and large language models and their application to healthcare.
His work has been published and presented in a variety of methodological and applied venues, including AAAI, NeurIPS, JAMA Open, NPJ Digital Medicine, and others. He is passionate about translating new advances in machine learning in order to build tools in the real world that improve the quality, safety, and efficacy of health care delivery and operations.
